2007-08-17

This past month in Bangladesh saw a vast swathe of land across much of the country engulfed in floodwater, and flood-related diseases such as malaria, cholera and diarrhea broke out in many affected areas. Diplomats of Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh are deeply concerned about the safety of Chinese citizens in Bangladesh. Chinese Ambassador H. E. Mr. Zheng Qingdian asked the different sections of the Embassy to gather information about Chinese citizens in Bangladesh and be ready to offer assistance to them.

On August 14, in defiance of the heavy rain, Ambassador Zheng paid a visit to Chinese engineers in Tongji Power Plant in the suburb of Dhaka. After being shown around the plant, Ambassador Zheng held a meeting with the Chinese staff members. He said that Bangladesh is short of power supply, especially during this monsoon season. He hoped that staff members there could do their best and make due contributions to the current relief work.

Tongji Power Plant is an important project funded by Bangladesh government and constructed by a Chinese company. It came into operation in 2005. With the yearly capacity of 100 megawatt, it can meet one third of the electricity demand of Dhaka.
